Teaching tips for geometry practice

  • Area answers are in square units (sq units), perimeter answers are in plain units — the unit itself is half the lesson.
  • For triangles, the half matters: ½ × base × height. A triangle is half of a rectangle with the same base and height, which is why the ½ is there.
  • Use the formula sheet as a scaffold at first, then attempt problems without it as confidence grows.

Common mistakes to watch for

Forgetting the ½ in triangle area.
Remember: a triangle is half a rectangle. If the answer looks like it should be twice as big, you forgot the ½.
Using perimeter formula for area (or vice versa).
Perimeter is the distance around (add all sides, plain units). Area is the surface inside (multiply, square units). Say the word "around" vs "inside" before solving.
