Packaging tips that reduce DIM weight
- Cut the longest side. DIM weight scales with volume — trimming 1 in off the longest side can remove several billable pounds on large boxes.
- Right-size the box. Use a box with at most 2 in of total interior slack; air in the package is what you pay for.
- Avoid double boxing unless required; every added inch compounds volume.
- Check the divisor on your invoice. If you have a negotiated Daily Rate, confirm 139 is applied — an invoice using 166 on a large box overcharges you.
Direct answer
• UPS DIM weight = (L × W × H, each rounded up) ÷ 139.
• Chargeable weight = the greater of actual weight and DIM weight, rounded up to the next pound.
• Ceiling rounding has applied since August 2025; retail counter rates may use 166.

FAQ
What divisor does UPS use for dimensional weight in 2026?
UPS uses 139 for UPS Ground and UPS Air (domestic) with ceiling rounding — dimensions are rounded up to the next whole inch and the DIM weight rounds up to the next whole pound. This has been in effect since August 2025 for most accounts; retail counter rates on some services may still use 166.
How is UPS chargeable weight determined?
Chargeable weight = the greater of the actual scale weight and the dimensional weight. Dimensional weight = (rounded length × rounded width × rounded height) ÷ 139. UPS bills per-package on this figure with ceiling rounding.
Does the ÷166 divisor ever apply to UPS?
Yes — the 166 divisor historically applied to UPS domestic shipments and still appears on some retail/over-the-counter service rates and select international services. If you ship on a negotiated Daily Rate, ÷139 is the figure to use. Confirm on your current UPS rate sheet before quoting customers.
