Teaching tips for concentration

  • g/L = (mol/L) × molar mass (g/mol). The molar mass converts the counting unit (mol) into a mass unit (g).
  • Keep track of per-liter: both units are "per liter", so the liter never enters the conversion — only mol ↔ g does.
  • Use the same molar masses as the moles sheets (H₂O 18.015, NaCl 58.44, CO₂ 44.01, O₂ 32.0, CH₄ 16.04 g/mol).

Common mistakes to watch for

Forgetting to multiply by molar mass.
mol/L alone is a count; g/L is that count expressed as mass. The step mol/L × M (g/mol) = g/L is required.
Confusing mol/L with total moles.
Both mol/L and g/L are concentrations (per liter). The conversion stays "per liter"; you never multiply or divide by a volume here.
