Teaching tips for energy

  • Anchor: 1 kJ = 1000 J. To kJ divide by 1000; to J multiply by 1000. Powers of ten, no decimals to track.
  • Use prefixes as a ladder: milli < base < kilo. Moving from J (base) to kJ (kilo) is three places left (÷1000).
  • Estimate: 1 kJ is about the energy to lift a small apple 100 m — a tangible anchor for the scale.

Common mistakes to watch for

Multiplying instead of dividing when going J → kJ.
kJ is the bigger unit name but the smaller number: 2500 J = 2.5 kJ. Divide by 1000 to shrink J into kJ.
Writing the wrong number of zeros.
1000 has three zeros. 2500 J → 2.5 kJ (move the decimal three places left). The engine’s exact powers of ten make this checkable.
