Teaching tips for temperature

  • Celsius → Kelvin: add 273.15 (K = °C + 273.15). Zero Kelvin is absolute zero.
  • Celsius → Fahrenheit: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. The ×9/5 step is the scale stretch; +32 shifts the zero point.
  • Anchor points: 0 °C = 32 °F = 273.15 K (water freezes); 100 °C = 212 °F = 373.15 K (water boils). Use them to sanity-check.

Common mistakes to watch for

Forgetting to add 32 in °C → °F.
The +32 shifts the zero point; without it 0 °C would wrongly map to 0 °F. Always do ×9/5 first, then +32.
Subtracting 273.15 the wrong way for K → °C.
°C = K − 273.15. Since K is always larger than the °C number, you subtract to get back to Celsius.
