Feet to Meters: Pitfalls That Break Construction Math

The exact factor

The international foot is exactly 0.3048 meters by definition. For almost all construction and everyday use this is the only factor you need.

Mistake 1: the US survey foot

Legacy surveying used the US survey foot = 0.3048006096 m, about 2 parts per million larger. On a 1 km line that is a ~2 mm difference — negligible for buildings, but it matters in cadastral and GIS work. Know which one your plans use.

Mistake 2: squaring the linear factor for area

To convert square feet to square meters you must use 0.3048² = 0.092903, not 0.3048. Applying the linear factor to an area understates it by ~70%. The same logic applies to volume (use 0.3048³).

US survey foot is deprecated

The old US survey foot (0.304800609601 m) was retired in 2023 in favor of the international foot (0.3048 m). Modern conversions use the international foot; mixing them drifts over long distances.

Inches vs. centimetres for screens

Display and wheel sizes are often rounded to the nearest convenient number; a "27-inch" monitor is nominal, not a precise 68.58 cm panel.
